Traditional Art vs Digital Art

Suddenly I felt that I want to write a bit about this interesting topic, what makes me think, what makes people express their opinion and sometimes makes fight too. I searched some comments and read a very fun debate.

So the question is which is better? The Traditional or the Digital Art?

Traditional & Digital
Both are mine. The digital one is weaker because
this was my first portrait, and I had no many experience.
Some people claim both are art, many people claim that digital art is NOT art, and these people often hurt digital art and artists.

First, I gathered some comments from one of site, which will be accompanied by my opinion.

„Everyone knows graphic artists are just over hyped lazy still life animators and honestly if your offended no one cares its the truth.” – O rly? Later I will explicate this.

„And really if there's so many great graphic artists out there why don't they go to the game industry or anime. Isn't it the same thing?” – It is maybe because it is just a hobby and don’t want to work at company. And also I hate if somebody says what I have to make. I want draw my own ideas, work in my tempo and own style. These people may think same.

„You're letting the computer do all the work and then you put your name on it.” – Nice, one of my favourite.

„Digital art is for lazy people, and for people who don't t have real talent whatsoever.”  – This is the most funniest comment I’ve ever read. :D

So, I think many of them have never tried digital software or tablet before, so I can’t (and don’t want to) understand why they think it is not difficult or not art, or we are lazy and just „let the computer do all the works”. The success of artworks don’t depend on only program or some brush what you use, but skills too. And this is true, even if hard to believe or accept. If it is easy to use then it means that two different people with different skill level can make same quality drawing, right? Do not make me laugh! It is bullshit. What’s more! A lot of digital artist can draw well in traditional too. (Like me, if my skill signify good. x’D) And we, digital art artist aren’t lazy at all. We spend a lot of time in front of computer and some of us care about details so much.

Details of some of my drawings.
„Art is art and honestly even if you are terrible at drawing, digital painting doesn't make you magically better.” – TRUE

„If you say traditional is more valuable than digital because it's harder to do, then are you saying painting with your feet is better than painting with your hands?” – Haha, It is nice too!

„As well as this digital media has no limits. Water colours and such things have limits as they go light to dark.” – kinda true.

„You say digital painting is not art but writing is art, poetry, or a song is art.” – This was a frequent and surprising topic.

„Also on digital art you can easily just click an undo button. This will never be an option in traditional art.” – Yes, it is not bad and useful. :D Easy but there is some easy thing in traditional too.

„I would actually like to point out that it really takes so much patience to do a very complete digital piece.” – True, true.

„If you are good at creating digital art you can use your skill in photoshop for example to make your art look as if it was a real panting or any other traditional art type.” – So it means, digital art is many-sided. Actually I have no problem with this, although I like better if digital media doesn’t want to pretend/look like any kind of traditional art. (This is my current opinion. Maybe, one day it will change. :D Who knows.)

„Digital art does not exist in a physical form!” – True (and sad), but it can remain forever in finished result and never gets old.

„Tools are too expensive.” – It is about traditional art. Yep, tablet is expensive too, but that is just one-time cost within 2-3-4 years.

„Digital art is comfortable.” – Yes, more comfortable.

The common problem was that digital art has textures, brushes, layers, etc, etc, and that digital artists use many methods that make drawing easier. The true is that both media use unique tools. When I drew portrait I often blurred shades with a cotton buds or tissue on the skin, because it looks more realistic (although I don’t know whether that is correct or not, but lot of people do same). Or I would like to mention about painting. Painters use special brush for example for leaves or waterfalls. And what about splatter? And what about using different laces or any other materials for getting some texture? And what about applying layer upon layer, let it dry, and then add more color? Everything is same, both we grab and control, just one of them is digital.

I noticed, that most of people who prefer traditional art and hate digital art, often got angry. The next, what I want to explain is not against of some people personalities, I just didn’t like their behave. They seemed offensive for me, not only against of digital art but against of people too who love to draw in digital. What the most saddest is these hater group forgot that EVERY people started with pencil and paper, and none of them thought about it. I am sure that digital artist have never forgotten from where they started. The people, who said they love both drawing methods or prefer better digital than traditional, were kind usually. They seemed more open-minded and composed. (But this is only my realization.)

I can understand the angry side because I was one of them just couple of years ago. So here is coming my story. I started to draw with pencil about 6(?) years ago. I loved that so much (here you can see some of my works). I thought same that „Digital art is not art, because what is that? Just use some programme to make drawing, the artists have no talent as traditional artists have, can not use real tools just some digital brush…” and so on. Little by little, I thought that I am not correct. Maybe I was jealous too. I saw a lot of good digital drawing and found some very skillful people. Soon I gave myself, admit their works and I was just amazed at them. Then, one day somebody asked me, „Don’t you want to have a digital tablet?” and I agreed finally. At that time I was interested in digital art already, I wanted to try it. So I got my tablet, I was excited and started to draw. My first opinion was that „DIGITAL DRAWING IS SO DIFFICULT! WAAA! How can those people (who I admire) draw so capably? It is impossible!” Haha, yeah, but I forced myself and tried again and again. It was two years ago. I’ve improved my skills a lot from the begining, (but still there is room for improvement). It is very easy to mess up, really difficult to draw to get fine and demanding result. Recently I am in digital art but I love both media.

So my opinion is that Digital Art is OK, and Traditional Art is OK too. Both are art and need talent, time and patience, and none of them is better than other.

By the way, nowadays I am thinking that I will draw again with pencil. I am longing for that. Something portrait. It was 2 years ago when I used something traditional last. It is loooong time. I am curious that my talent regressed or not? Or it is become better thanks to digital art? Both can be. But I don’t know when I will bring some newborn drawing, maybe some months later. I don’t have enough tools now (and I am out of country but it is incidental).
